Heavy Metal Magazine

A veritable empire of illustrated sci-fi and fantasy media and merchandise–has pushed boundaries since its U.S. start in 1977. Creative Media Alliance joined forces with Heavy Metal magazine to transform its fan engagement, attract new customers and ultimately, boost its e-commerce performance.

A robust strategy amplifying video, animated and static display ad creative through Facebook, YouTube, Google, and Programmatic media tactics—along with the collaboration of Heavy Metal’s own hyper-creative and promotion-friendly marketing team—ignited new audiences to “take a ride on Heavy Metal.”

VIDEO PRODUCTION / MOTION GRAPHICS

CMA produced a series of motion-comic video trailers for Heavy Metal to bring life to select new projects. These teasers visually highlight new books (offered on the Heavy Metal online shop) to increase sales and drive more video engagement. Our video team built customized motion graphic templates to create a branded, cohesive look and feel. We also produced a number of custom bumper ads deployed across Facebook.

Facebook Ads

CMA started Heavy Metal’s Facebook advertising in Dec. 2019, warming up its audience with a focus on brand awareness. CMA kicked off 2020 by building out advanced pixel strategies for Heavy Metal’s website for prospecting and retargeting conversion campaigns. Additionally, CMA built out a strong and robust funnel strategy on Facebook, nurturing Heavy Metal’s already-engaged audience through retargeting campaigns. Sales increased, while video views and web traffic campaigns sparked brand recognition and engagement.

YOUTUBE VIDEO ADS

After partnering with CMA, Heavy Metal Magazine took its first foray into YouTube video ads. In a matter of a few months, the client has logged literally 31,000 hours (and counting) in ad view time from its comic book fan audiences. These in-house-produced short motion-comic trailers feature works created by Heavy Metal’s notable celebrity authors such as Dylan Sprouse, Dan Fogler, and Matthew Medney.

PROGRAMMATIC ADS

CMA launched programmatic media for Heavy Metal in April 2020, to retarget web visitors to drive overall shop sales, seeing on average 7.5X ROAS (return on ad spend) since the start of our campaign. CMA has created more than 200 unique static display and animated gif ads, focusing on timely promotions and brand awareness. CMA launched additional campaigns to promote Heavy Metal’s new podcast series, WonderWerk, and utilized app-based targeting to affinity groups and custom audio ad placements to drive subscriptions.

Through our Google Search Ads, one in every six people who sees the text ads will click on the ads to go to the Heavy Metal Magazine website. If someone in the U.S. has searched on Google for fantasy, sci-fi, or horror graphic novels since May 2020, they’ve likely seen the CMA-produced Heavy Metal search ads.
